When someone shits all over your pride and joy. My family car has been with us for nine years, nearly ten. It's been on both sides of the world and has covered everything from urban jungles to remote country lanes. I still remember the first day we took it for a test drive and I still remember the day we said goodbye as it boarded a container bound for the port. I was there when it arrived at its home and I was there on its first drive in a new, foreign land. Over the years, it's had its fair share of problems, repairs and modifications, but it's nothing a little love, effort and (occasionally quite a lot of) money can't fix. I've grown to love this car, a car that stayed with me through childhood into my teens. It holds many memories and I fully intend to make more in the future. It's precious to me and I've promised to never let it go.

So whenever someone insults it or insults me and my family for making a seemingly bad choice, I feel really hurt. At the end of the day, it's not just any car that can be replaced with something new or something better. I've lived with my car for a long time - I know every little niggle, every little quirk and after nine years, I know what it can do and what it can't. It's become something to depend on and after all our time together, something unique and special. You could probably say it's become a friend.

I guess things must be different in HK, a friend of mine had an R53 Cooper S and we called him a hairdresser and that was as bad as it got. I'm UK based, Hence being on Oppo at this time.

As a former R53 owner, I have to ask: is your user name a reference to the turbo you've added to the supercharger? If so, that's awesome.

Welcome to what I read and hear everyday since GM's recall shitstorm started. Not only are our cars total pieces of shit just for being GM, but my parents are idiots for buying them.

Ive learned to just ignore the haters. Theyre the ones missing out on some actually very good cars.

Why do you even care what people think/say about your car? At the end of the day it's just that - YOUR car, not theirs. Just give zero fucks and move on with your life. After all, it's not like you're driving a New Beetle or something :)

Usually people are just dense, not really trying to be insulting. Don't fret it.

I remember very distinctly a time, sometime in the mid 80s, sitting in the living room at my grandparents when the mailman stopped by to drop a package off. My grandpa was still driving his pristine condition 2nd gen Galaxie hardtop sedan. It had been the car that my father and his three siblings were raised in and Grandpa just kept it going and kept it clean. The mailman asked him "Why are you driving that old car. It's too big, unreliable, and gets horrible gas mileage. Don't you know that the Japanese companies are where it's at, they'll go forever, sip gas, and be safer. They're FWD so they're better in the snow".

Grandpa just sort of chortled and goes "Yeah, I get that, but that's not what I want in a car." The mailman looked at him like he was crazy and just shrugged his shoulders.

The mailman 'insulted' (if you can really do that) his car and car choices. He wasn't doing it maliciously, he was just coming from a different place, had different priorities and thought he was giving good advice.

Just let it slide, it's not personal.

I understand where you're coming from with this. although in my case, our family car has been with us for the last 15 years and is slowly dying I believe. I talk shit about it all the time and for good reason: it's fading, scratched up, rusting up and it's not long for this world.

But damn, have I had so many memories in that van. I lived my entire life through that vans use. I'll hate to see it go, but it's time is getting near.
